Assume a Key Role in the Play of Life, from Mere Witness to Actor: Voluntourism

In a rather egocentric and superficial era, it is incredible to discover a humanist face in the tourism sector. Who might choose to travel in order to serve, and find pleasure in this altruistic action?

Travel is about experiences, a close encounter, and an intense and meaningful act, the pleasure of leaving a trace. Today, the travelers of the world look for ways to get involved, to be actors rather than observers. Voluntourism and sustainable tourism are tangible proof of this new trend that exemplifies an alternate way to interact with other countries, with other landscapes and species, with other people.

All the same, there are different types of volunteer tourism, depending on the preferences of the traveler. Ranging from trips where the focus is on the preservation or maintenance of nature and its species, to more social and community-oriented activities such as building schools and housing or cataloguing.

Whether interested in nature or helping people, the truth is that the volunteer approach opens a new door to the destination, it presents a more insightful and complete experience where the environment, the community and the traveler all win.

Mexico has endless options for volunteer travelers. The incredible natural biospheres, protected areas, as well as the important number of sanctuaries for important species are some of the destinations that welcome nature lovers.

A good example is the preservation of the Olive Ridley Turtle on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. In this program, volunteers stay at Campamento Tecoman, located right on the beach, to work alongside biologists in specific tasks related to preserving the turtle. The project also involves research on birdlife, reptile and plant species, including work on a crocodile conservation project.

In a more social scope, discover the rural life of Mexico by volunteering at a specific community in the state of Morelos, working side by side with the local people to implement sustainable practices that will revitalize their way of life. A trip like this represents a unique way of interacting and understanding a culture from within. Voluntourism is about making a change, returning home with a feeling of fulfillment rather than just a digital picture testimony of a trip. For more information, please, visit:
